The Santo Niño de Cebu Augustinian Social Development Foundation, Inc. hosted a back-to-back educational event among members of the Kahugpongan sa Mamumuong Mag-uuma sa Monte Marvilla (KAMAUMO) based in the Augustinian property in Brgy.Kang-actol, Dumanjug, Cebu in the last week of April, 2021.
On April 23, the farmers were accompanaied by SNAF staff in an educational immersion with the Bojo Aloguinsan Ecotourism Association (BAETAS), a people’s organization which owns and manages the world-famed community-based eco-tourism initiative: The Bojo River Cruise. The initiative, which strives for the restoration of the mangroves forest and the rehabilitation of the river, has garnered for BAETAS the Top 100 Global Sustainable Destinations for three consecutive years since 2016. It also bagged the UN Tourism Inspire Awards and the ASEAN Tourism Awards.
BAETAS leaders and members, who acted as tour guides and boat personnel, shared to KAMAUMO and SNAF how they started their community organizing work in 2009 among 52 member-families most of whom are fishers and farmers. They discussed during the plenary meeting, casual conversations, and the river cruise the difficulties and the successes in drawing organizational commitment both from members and the community at large in adopting a non-extractive and non-consumptive philosophy.
Highlight of the event was the river cruise that showcases the fruits of the community-led initiative along the Bojo River as it snakes through the mangroves and out into the Tañon Strait.
On April 29-30, SNAF hosted a “Simple Bookkeeping, Productivitiy, and Project Management Seminar Seminar” by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) VII for KAMAUMO members at the recently inaugurated Augustinian Pavilion in Monte Maravilla, Brgy.Kang-actol.
The two-day training by DOLE7 was meant not only to equip KAMAUMO members with technical knowledge on basic finance documentation, but also to inculcate in them the value of collective responsibility in sustaining the health of the organization through transparency and participative leadership.
No less than DOLE7 Cebu Provincial Field Officer Vivencio Lagahid initiated the training along with Seymoun Hamoy. Other instructors were Erly Javier, Mark Bentulan and Maan Gonato of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board.
Although, less than half of the 27 members of KAMAUMO attended the events, all the officers were present which ensures the downstreaming of the knowledge and capacities produced from these activities. ###
