Cebu City, Philippines—Even the COVID-19 pandemic cannot stop the spirit of Christmas from reaching the poorest of the poor.
Taking stock of minimum safety measures, homeless families and individuals around the Basilica Minore Del Santo Niño celebrated the yuletide with a modest Christmas observance through the Kan-anan ni Niño program of the Santo Nino de Cebu Augustinian Social Development Foundation, Inc. (SNAF) on December 25, 2020 at the Multi-Purpose Gym of Brgy.San Roque, Cebu City. Wearing face masks and keeping physical distance, the beneficiaries waited for their turn in receiving foodstuff and gifts especially themed for the occasion.
In sum, SNAF distributed noche buena packs, fruits, and dessert on top of regular packed meals to 27 homeless families and 34 individuals. It also handed out school supplies and goodies to 24 children.
The holiday joy glistened in everyone’s eyes. It wafted the air with laughter and children’s giggles even in the limited time that the beneficiaries have come together.
To echo Tatay Jose in his opening prayer, “…Sa kakabus anaa ang diwa sa Pasko.” (Christmas dwells in our poverty).###(DRA)
